Should I Use Ozonated Oils for My Oil Pulling Routine?

Oil pulling is an ancient practice that has seemed to work to improve oral health for thousands of years, but do modern medical studies corroborate the empirical evidence? We combine the ancient practice of oil pulling with mouthwash in our Ozone Mouthwash + Tooth Oil.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is a practice that has been around for thousands of years all over the world. Who came up with the idea and why is anyone's guess, but essentially it's quite similar to how you would use mouthwash. There are three main differences between using mouthwash and oil pulling

  1. Oil pulling requires oil to be the main or only ingredient in the solution.
  2. Oil pulling will last 5-20 minutes as opposed to 30 seconds for mouthwash.
  3. Oil pulling requires the user to push and pull the oil through their teeth.

What the critics say about oil pulling

I was reading about OIL PULLING and came across this statement.

"Brushing and flossing properly can completely prevent cavities. Why use a harder unproven system?"

Also, on the American Dental Association's own website, here's the statement that you'll find

"Currently, there are no reliable scientific studies to show that oil pulling reduces cavities, whitens teeth or improves oral health and well-being. Based on the lack of scientific evidence, the American Dental Association does not recommend oil pulling as a dental hygiene practice. The ADA continues to recommend that to maintain good dental health you brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and floss between your teeth once a day and don’t use tobacco."

I am unaware of any potential negative effects of oil pulling so at a bare minimum we can say that it's not going to hurt anything, but is it worth the time and effort that it takes?

Is Oil Pulling Worth It?

A recent survey of the studies on oil pulling published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene had this to say:

"There was a probable benefit of oil pulling in improving gingival health. Chlorhexidine remained superior in reducing the amount of plaque, compared to oil pulling. However, there was very low certainty in the evidence albeit the clinically beneficial effect of oil pulling intervention."

Some people also experience good results from oil pulling. Here's an example from Margaret:

"I used oil pulling to heal the beginnings of a cavity, and it worked. My method was to brush with a combination of coconut oil and baking soda every day. My dentist was amazed when the cavity was gone at my next checkup six months later."

What Type of Oil Should I Use?

Sesame oil has a longer history of use and is more commonly used in other countries as well. It has good anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that make it a good choice.

Coconut oil seems to be the most popular here in the USA because it tastes better than the other two and has lauric acid which may increase its antibacterial properties.

Sunflower seed oil is high in Vitamin E and Omega 6 fatty acids. Along with its lighter taste, it can be another good choice for oil pulling.

Ozone Oils for the Mouth

Ozone Oils and ozonated water have been used for decades by holistic and biological dentists all over the world because of their ability to promote good oral health.

The holistic dentist often uses ozonated water immediately after it is generated to reduce the chance of infection and help the mouth heal properly. The immediate use of ozonated water is critical because the ozone will break down within about 30 - 40 minutes after it is produced.

It's a known fact that ozone is a reactive molecule that breaks down quickly making it difficult to use. Because of this, we receive questions all the time about how we can say that many of our products have a shelf life of over two years.

The nice thing about oils is that they contain many double bonds. Sunflower seed oil in particular is chocked full of these double bonds. When ozone comes into contact with an oil that has double bonds, the ozone gas is transformed into an ozonide which gets "stuck" in the oil. These ozonides can last for years in an oil making it a safe and effective medium for ozone.

When the ozone-infused oil is applied to your skin or tissue, the ozonide is transferred from the oil into your body where it can then be used in a number of ways.
